On December 2, 2020, Sarai Ayemperoumal visited Paradise Nails in Fort Myers, Florida, for an acrylic gel manicure. She reported that the tools used for her manicure were not removed from a sterile plastic package. Instead, they were removed from a drawer.
Following her visit to the nail salon, Ms. Ayemperoumal developed a rash on her extremities. She visited Coastal Med Primary and Urgent Care, was diagnosed with an allergic reaction, and was prescribed Medrol pack tablets, Cephalexin, and Hydroxyzine. When her condition did not improve, she followed up with the doctors at Dermatology Solutions.
They diagnosed her with a rash on her arms, face, hands, and trunk, as well as MIPS and a skin infection. The rash persisted for two months, causing pain and itching. Ms. Ayemperoumal was prescribed hydrocortisone cream and triamcinolone, but her condition still did not improve.
In addition to the rash, Ms. Ayemperoumal presented with a fever and weakness when she sought treatment at Lee Memorial Hospital. The doctors diagnosed her with hyponatremia, septic shock, Metabolic acidosis, and acute renal failure. To treat her condition, she was prescribed bacitracin, calcium carbonate, carvedilol, linezolid, lisinopril, polyethylene glycol, and prednisone.
Dr. Bishal Rawal, a nephrologist, also examined her. She was diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease, proteinuria, and acute renal failure. Ms. Ayemperoumal took several trips to Lee Memorial Hospital and was placed in the ICU for dehydration.
